Yes, another hiatus as life keeps chipping away, but I’m back again with another post. I thought about writing this immediately after the last one, but I knew I had to conduct some research, and I still do to be accurate. However, let me take you back to the origins.
I’ve been trying to meditate consistently, using guided meditation. Within each meditation, music plays in the background while Dr Joe Dispensa is speaking, which varies between morning and night meditations (one for each). It might sound crazy, but there are times whilst I’m meditating, it’s like I go into a trance, which I believe isn’t necessarily to do with Dr Joe’s voice, but the music playing behind it, which has me thinking, does music have the power to do that in the same way?
The short answer is probably yes. I’m sure we’ve all heard a song that’s made you feel a certain way, but what I’m talking about is a lot deeper. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with these playlists on YouTube, which feature music for concentration, sleep, healing, and more. The essence behind these playlists is that the frequency of the sound entrains the brain into different states, depending on whether the frequency is low or high.
How Brain Wave Entrainment Works
- The brain naturally produces electrical waves (brain waves), which differ in frequency
- The external sound frequencies (the frequency of music in this case) influence the brain’s own electrical waves to synchronise with the external rhythm, thus influencing your state
One key thing to note here, which I didn’t before, is binaural beats. When different frequencies are presented in each ear, the brain perceives a third frequency that is the difference between the two, which is probably why music sounds “different” through headphones, as you’ll only get/feel the effects of binaural beats from listening through headphones.
I say this all to say that the sounds within meditation and frequency music got me thinking about how to make my music more of an experience spiritually/mentally because I am really about sonics at the end of the day.
One of my favourite songs ever is Preme (feat. Drake & Future) – DnF.
I don’t know what you call it (maybe the drums), but in the beat, they almost remind me of those Tibetan singing bowls. I could never quite put my finger on it before, but I’ve had a fascination with “spaceship-sounding music.” Another great example that mirrors the first song is Rich the Kid’s “Plug Walk.” I really hope that makes sense if you listen to both of these songs lol.
My point is, the same trance-like feeling I get from my meditation. And it got me thinking how I can implement that into my music, and also, what type of bullshit are we listening to currently lol, so here’s some food for thought for myself, or any other artist out there.
Brainwaves (measured in hertz Hz)
- Delta (1-3 Hz) – Associated with deep sleep
- Theta (4-7 Hz) – Associated with relaxation, meditative or dream-like states
- Alpha (8-12 Hz) – Associated with calm or quiet reflection
- Beta (13-38 Hz) – Associated with concentration, alertness and mental activity
- Gamma (39-42 Hz) – Associated with higher-level perception and consciousness
If you’re curious to experience what I’ve been talking about, here’s the meditation I listen to every day. I’d recommend giving it a try.
With that in mind, I would like to conclude this post by sharing something special: my latest release, HPC Anthem.
