To get started with your home studio, of course, you need the equipment! In this post, I’ll tell you what you need to purchase to get started at a cost-effective price and where to get it. So let’s get to it!
Microphone – RØDE NT1A
The microphone I suggest for your first home studio is the RØDE NT1A. This is an industry-standard microphone with outstanding clarity and audio capture, which you can purchase from Amazon, and it comes with a shock mount, pop filter and XLR cable, so this is a great package to start with.

Audio Interface – Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen
If you’ve ever seen an XLR cable, there’s no way it’ll be able to fit into a laptop audio jack. The audio interface is the middleman, allowing you to connect the microphone to the laptop. Air mode adds extra clarity to your voice and is light and compact. This audio interface is the best and easiest to start (and continue) with for that studio sound at home.

Microphone Stand – Aokeo
The reason I got this stand is that it comes with an Isolation Shield, and it can adjust over 6’3 in height. Exactly my height! So that was very useful for me. A potential downside to this microphone stand is that you probably couldn’t use it whilst sitting down unless you have a high chair. But I like to stand up whilst recording as standing up is better for the diaphragm when using your voice, which makes you sound better, especially when singing.

Headphones – Sennheiser HD 280 PRO
One thing you shouldn’t lack when it comes to your studio equipment is the headphones. That sound quality when hearing back your vocals/music is imperative, especially when it comes to mixing/engineering your vocals. The quality the Sennheiser HD 280 PRO offers are second to none, and the soft padding makes it comfortable on the ears.

Here is all the equipment you would need to start your home studio. I left out the sound speakers because:
- Mixing with your headphones is way better, and you hear things you wouldn’t otherwise
- Most people listen to music through portable speakers or earphones/headphones the majority of the time
So I don’t think it matters too much in my personal opinion. And I’m sure everyone has portable speakers to blast music, so you can easily use that once finished with the mix of your song.
Altogether, this will cost you £427.99. I admit, this was a lot cheaper when I bought it a couple of years ago, but it has the right balance of quality and price, and it’s the way to go, in my opinion.
