It’s been a while since I’ve written here, but I’m BACK! And I’ve got the perfect post to help everyone with today.
Creating a music project is always a grand moment in an artist’s career, whether an EP, mixtape or album, so if you find this difficult, here are some guidelines to get started.
Theme
Before starting a project, you should make sure you have a theme, whether that is a specific sound sonically, a subject matter, a story, etc. The songs should match that theme, creating cohesion, especially when marketing your project.
Another way to create this would be with the name or title of the project. For example, if your project was called: “New Challenges,” the songs could be you messing around with different genres, which would be your explanation for the title. You’re good as long as there is a story within your theme.
I’ve probably catfished you a bit here, but strictly from the artistic side (of creating the music), a theme is all you need. As a musician, feeling moves you, and that’s what you need to tap into more than anything else.
For example, my Afrobeats EP ‘NAIRA NASTY’ dropped on 29th February. As a Nigerian, our currency is the Naira, and the ‘nasty’ is just an alliteration with it (and also my Gamertag). The suggestive nature of the ‘nasty’ ties it so well for me because I’m literally dropping bangers for this.
